small-intro
For your information, the gynaecologist is the specialist for the female sexual organs. The specialist conducts regular preventive medical checkups, such as smear tests of the cervix (the mouth of the womb) and breast screening. Women of all ages are advised by the specialist on questions of contraception, infertility and problems with the menopause. When dealing with disorders of the female sexual organs the doctor conducts the appropriate tests and organizes the appropriate treatment. The doctor is able to make use of a variety of drugs or – if called for – surgical interventions. The gynecologist who has had the appropriate surgical training can, for instance, carry out a sterilization or a hysterectomy (where the womb is removed). The obstetrician is concerned with everything to do with pregnancy. The specialist advises and examines future mothers during this period of their lives and is generally responsible for what goes on during the birth. With the appropriate surgical training the doctor can – if necessary – even carry out a caesarean section. After the birth the specialist undertakes the initial care of the newborn and advises the mother after she has given birth, and addresses any other medical issues she may have.
